
What is FMGE?
The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), also known as the MCI Screening Test, is a licensing exam conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) in India. It is mandatory for Indian citizens who have completed their MBBS from a foreign medical college and wish to practice medicine in India.
FMGE Exam Pattern
- Total Questions: 300 MCQs
- Duration: 5 hours (split into two sessions)
- Passing Marks: 150 out of 300 (50%)
- Negative Marking: No
- Conducted: Twice a year (June and December)
Subject-Wise Preparation Strategy
Pre-Clinical Subjects (High Weightage)
- Anatomy: Focus on upper limb, lower limb, thorax, and neuroanatomy. Use Netter's Atlas for visual learning.
- Physiology: Concentrate on CVS, renal, and endocrine physiology. Understand Guyton's concepts.
- Biochemistry: Enzyme kinetics, metabolic pathways, and clinical correlations are high-yield topics.
Para-Clinical Subjects
- Pathology: Robbins is the gold standard. Focus on hematology, neoplasia, and systemic pathology.
- Pharmacology: Drug classifications, mechanisms of action, and adverse effects. KD Tripathi is recommended.
- Microbiology: Bacteriology, virology, and parasitology. Focus on lab diagnosis methods.
Clinical Subjects
- Medicine: Cardiology, endocrinology, and neurology are high-yield. Harrison's Principles for reference.
- Surgery: General surgery, orthopedics, and urology. Bailey & Love for conceptual clarity.
- OBG: High-risk pregnancy, contraception, and gynecological oncology.
- Pediatrics: Neonatology, nutrition, and immunization schedules.
Tips from Successful Candidates
- Start early: Begin FMGE preparation from your 3rd year of MBBS alongside your regular studies
- Use MCQ banks: Practice at least 100 MCQs daily from FMGE-specific question banks
- Join a coaching program: Online FMGE coaching platforms like DAMS, Prepladder, and Marrow offer structured courses
- Focus on high-yield subjects: Medicine, Surgery, OBG, and Pediatrics together account for nearly 50% of questions
- Revise regularly: Create revision notes and review them every 2 weeks
- Take mock tests: Simulate exam conditions with full-length mock tests at least once a week
